 Kompong Luong

Kompong Luong
The floating town of Kompong Luong on Tonl'e Sab Lake is arguably one of the most interesting places to visit in Pursat Province. It has as many as 10,000 residents who live floating on the lake. The town moves with the level of water in the lake. The population of Kompong Luong is almost predominantly Vietnamese. There are floating markets, restaurants, schools, medical clinics, karaoke bars, and crocodile farms. There are also plenty of places to stop for an iced coffee and something to drink, or to just to soak up the atmosphere of life on the water.

Gem-colored silk Hol, Pamuong, Chorabap, Sampot, Alounh, Sarong, Kaniew, and Krama in brilliant red, blue, green, purple, violet, and yellow are stacked from floor to ceiling in the shops at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This Cambodian handicraft has been passed on from generation to generation. One can see the land of green rice paddies, shining blue waters, great rivers, and lush forests. They are learning and re-learning the arts of their ancestors. You can visit silk weavers in various places of Cambodia: Kandal, Preyveng, and Takeo Provinces. Daily colors for the Khmer traditional costume are dark yellow silk for Monday, purple for Tuesday, bland green and copper for Wednesday, light green for Thursday, dark blue for Friday, dark violet for Saturday, and red for Sunday.

When you travel to Kompong Luong, you will see the old royal port in Kandal Province, where villagers craft intricate silver bowls in shape of fruits, elephants, deer, wild pigs, fish, and goats. Silversmithing reached its height during the 11th century when crafted object were used primarily by royalty and upper class for funerary ceremony and religious rituals.
